Curb Appeal

So I have this urge to landscape, but no budget and no skills/knowledge. I decided I would start with a couple pots on either side of the front door with mums in them for the fall. Should be easy enough, right? I went to Job Lot and they didn't have any pots left over, BUT they had these big beautiful mums from, where else, NJ. So I bought 2. They had the hook for hanging, but I figured I could just cut that part off because I had nowhere to hang them.

I then went on to Benny's, which I had never even entered before, but it's basically a hardware/home supplies type store, with lots and lots of tires. They had a nice, tall, plastic planter on clearance for $7.99! But they only had one. So on to Home Depot. They had several choices of pots but nothing was really grabbing me. The ones I liked were either too small or too expensive. Plus, on my way in, I passed this little self-contained display with mums and a Welcome sign in it! That would have been perfect! Although a little small.

Finally on my way out, I spotted these iron-looking stands for hanging plants. Not at all what I had in mind, but I thought, "Huh. That just might work." So I bought two and brought them home and they work quite nicely I think. I just have to figure out how to make a little landing space for them on either side of the steps because there's not really enough room where they are now, but I like them and I think it makes the house look more lived in. Baby steps.

PS - Also at Job Lot I bought some daffodil bulbs to plant around the mailbox so they will come up next spring. They are called Hollywood Daffodils. They had several types, but how could I resist those, really.

  1. They are gorgeous! Love them. Looking forward to seeing how you work it out. I'm sure someone will have the perfect idea to get them off the landing but still part of the "welcome to our house" idea.

  2. I love them! Maybe you could try sitting them in the grass beside the railing.

  3. The grass on one side is nice and flat. On the other side - not so much. So I guess I'd have to dig it up and flatten it out.

  4. I agree with Kristen, a couple of cement pavers would make a nice flat surface...and I'd imagine that would be a pretty easy and inexpensive fix. Your mums look lovely :)

  5. I have some extra pavers from when my parents did their patio. I haven't tried them out yet, but I'll keep you posted.
