Life in a Small Town

I have so very much enjoyed following the blogs of the Hunter girls (Life With Peanut, Little Kissy Homemaker) that I decided I might as well start one of my own. I chose the theme of Simple Pleasures because in these difficult times, it helps to remember the little things that make us happy, and there are many. We just have to look. So here goes...

I live in a small town in Rhode Island, the kind of town where you do not go grocery shopping without running into someone you know. I work at a handblown glass studio/shop in downtown Newport (www.thamesglass.com) and recently started working at a law office. So far, two different people that I know from working at the law office have come into the glass shop.

For the most part, life in a small town is great, but then there are those times like today. I was all set to write about the simple pleasure of the local library. You see, the Golden Globe nominations came out last week and I realized that I could request a lot of the TV movies that were nominated through the RI library website, to be sent for me to pick up at my local library free of charge.

I requested two and a few days later got a phone call that they were ready to be picked up and they would hold them until Saturday. So, all excited, I drive over there on my lunch break today, pulling in to the parking lot at 12:05, and the place is deserted. There is a sign on the door that says they are closing at noon due to the snow. Mind you a single snowflake has yet to fall. Of course a little while later, those snowflakes came with a vengeance, and I was so looking forward to a quiet evening at home with my movies.

So I must look elsewhere for my simple pleasure of the week, and I do have a good one. The other day at the glass shop, I was listening to my iPod and heard a song I had not heard in a long time. I was instantly transported to a friend's house in PA a decade or so ago and I smiled, picturing her "bum bum"ing along to the song and I remembered how much those weekends away meant to me in my young adulthood and simultaneously got that feeling in my gut of missing said friend because I haven't seen her for quite a while. But, we'll always have Rufus.

  3. Wow, this is exciting! I am a little bummed that a picture of Phoebe didn't even make a side note on your first post, but I understand...yay, Newport.
