The Bat Cave

So The Bat Guy came yesterday. That is actually the name of his business. He determined that the bats have made themselves a very nice home in the inside outer wall of the chimney. (Does that make sense? Not the flue which comes directly into the house; that has been capped; but the space surrounding that.) This is what happens when you have a DIY chimney. So for mucho dinero he will fix the problem next week. He very confidently told me that they put one-way valves in so the bats can get out, but can't get back in. Then a few days later all the bats will be gone and the guy comes back, removes the valves, and seals it all up. He also gives a 3 year guarantee of no bats in the house, so if we have any more problems in the next 3 years we get to call him and he has to deal with it. So there you go.

In the meantime, we are sleeping in the guest room downstairs, which I actually like, except that it's not our fancy HSN fake Tempurpedic mattress.

I am learning that home ownership is kind of like an extended version of planning a wedding. Everything is X amount of dollars, whether it's getting the driveway done, getting a new air conditioning unit (my sister is dealing with this one), or getting your house bat-proofed.

  1. I'm glad to hear that the bat issue does have a resolution. A little alarmed by the idea that there is a "family" of bats. I was more comfortable with the idea of one bat that just kept returning. Anyway, I'm happy that you will be sans bats soon.

  2. Interesting that a line in one of my favorite movies is: "You never really own a home - it owns you..." :)

  3. that is wonderful that he gives a garauntee, bats can be very difficult to get rid of (they are smart little critters), so it's nice that it's his problem and not yours.
