On A Lighter Note...

This past Wednesday, my friend, Deidi, and I went to Boston and met up with her sister, Lili, for dinner and to see a little known band called The Skinny Millionaires. How do I know about them? Well two of the guys in the band are glassblowers from the glass shop where I work! (Actually neither of them are currently working there, but they have in the past and the drummer also worked there way before I worked there.) They have played several times in Newport but almost always at around 10 PM and I could never get Lenny to go out that late.

So anyway, we started our evening with dinner at Dali, a tapas restaurant in Cambridge that Deidi had been wanting to go to for a long time. Deidi and her sister are Dominican so the waitress immediately started talking to us in Spanish. I understood some of it, but since we were sharing everything anyway, we made Deidi order so it all worked out. Everything was very yummy, including the Cava Sangria. A little pricey, but a fun night with the girls (I don't think guys would like it because it's not a lot of food.)

Then we drove over to T.T. the Bear's, also in Cambridge. Deidi's other sister, Elennis, told us a lot of hipsters go there. We had to ask her what a hipster was. We got there right around 9 when they were scheduled to go on. Of course they had not started yet, so probably not very hipster of us to show up that early, but I wanted to get my $7 worth. I passed Eamon, the bass player, on the way in and he was very surprised to see me. That was fun. And I got to say hi to Mike, the lead singer/guitar player/harmonica player/songwriter/rock star, before they went on. Mike was bummed they were going on so early. I think it was mostly their friends that were there, not a huge crowd, but it was very fun to see them in action. Mike the glassblower is a pretty quiet, kind of shy guy, not at all what he's like on stage. Maybe once a month or so he does randomly let out a scream while he's in the blowing room, but that's really the only sign of his inner rock star.

I did not bring my camera because that's not very hipster (and I didn't want my purse to be any heavier than absolutely necessary), so I don't have any photos of the evening's events, but here is a photo of the band from Mike's page:
Mike is the guy in the middle and Eamon is on the right. When we saw them they had another guy on guitar and another girl on violin. I think they're pretty good. The violin is very cool and different. And Mike's style is kinda different too. I got their Demo CD and I like it more and more the more I listen to it. 1. I love how concerned you are about being a "hipster"..I'm not really sure what that is either. Sounds like a fun night. I only went to a Tapas place once...we had to go get a slice of pizza afterward, but it was fun to try a variety of different little things...emphasis on little.

  2. Nice blog! I enjoyed our girls night out and hope we can do it again soon. It worked out great that it was at 9 pm. The Tapas restaurant was yummy but a bit pricey, the ambiance was nice though. The band was fun to watch and I liked that they made a shout-out for Newporters getting off the island!
