Cherry Trees

Well the cherry trees have mostly dropped all their beautiful blossoms, but since I never posted pics of them in full bloom, I'll relive it here:
These are the cherry trees in downtown Newport across from Kilwin's, which we visited one lovely Sunday afternoon.

And this is my cherry tree in full bloom. Isn't it just magnificent? Lenny asked on our way to the meeting the other night - Why do the blossoms last for such a short time? I made up this partly true answer (I think) about how the blossoms attract the bees that pollinate the trees so the fruit can grow. Sounds good, right? But then we don't actually get cherries on our cherry tree so I was kind of stuck there.

  1. You're correct about the flowers attacting bees for pollination purposes. What I don't know is if there are diffent "genders" of cherry trees that need to be involved in a cross pollination for fruit to appear.

  2. I also assumed there was something like that involved, but it's been awhile since my last biology class.
